Saturday 25th June was Graduation Day in the college. After three years of study and hard work the students enjoyed this final day of their academic career before becoming fully qualified elementary school teachers and moving on to working in schools. The students arrived early, smartly dressed wearing new suits, gowns and mortar boards, joined by family members who had travelled from all over the region to be there for the big day.
Most of the ceremony was taken up with speeches, musical numbers from the band and the giving of certificates. However, the actual giving of the diplomas didn’t happen on the day, with the only certificates being given to the highest performing students and the gold medal winners – the top male and female student
A highlight was the students getting up halfway to join in a mass Ethiopian dance, complete with shoulder shaking and shuffling all whilst wearing gowns and mortar boards. After the ceremony was over we spent some time having our photos taken with the new graduates and their families. Well done and congratulations (or “congra!” as they say here) to all the newly qualified teachers!
