Happy Downfall of the Derg Day! Today is another public holiday in Ethiopia and this one is extra special as it is the 20th anniversary since the downfall of the previous regime – the Derg. Yesterday, Abi Adi had a public ceremony to mark the occasion. The students of the college led the parade, marching down to the cattle market field where various other institutions from the town joined them. Even kindergartens and elementary schools joined the occasion and the buses from the bus station drove around the field while sounding their horns. Some of the little children were chanting things like: “We are here for freedom and democracy” and “We are working for the Ethiopian Renaissance” and there were many banners, flags and pictures of the Millennium Dam. There is a series of events happening at the college too, as Adwa College are visiting this weekend for sports competitions and to join in the celebrations.
