A couple of Saturdays back, I did my first ‘Fantastic Female Teachers’ class. This was open to all the female students in the college and I hoped to help them develop some skills they would need both as student teachers and as professionals.
This week’s class focused on ‘Voice’ – both as the physical thing we use to speak and on our abilities to speak out in public, sharing our ideas and opinions. The students discussed the many ways in which a female teacher would use her ‘voice’ and then we had a discussion on the factors that hinder this. Girls are generally quiet and non-participatory in classes here.
We played some games where we had to use our voices. For some of the girls, it may possibly have been the first time they’ve had to speak out in class so I hope it was a good experience for them.
