To coincide with International Womens Day on March 8th, the female affairs office organised a celebration and awareness raising session for all the female students.
The lunch hall was packed with females from all three year groups, who first listened to some health and HIV/AIDS advice from the staff at the local health clinic. This was followed by some short speeches from student representatives and then a traditional coffee ceremony, with delicious ambasha bread.
At the end there was an awards ceremony, where the boys joined us to receive certificates. These were awarded to the top three male and female students in each department. As students came up to receive their certificate, many of their friends followed to the front and even onto the stage! Here they tucked some birr notes into the necks of their friends, as a present for their success. There was a very warm atmosphere and lots of support amongst the students.
I was able to also make a short speech, congratulating them on their success and inviting them to take part in a new series of classes that I will do for the female students here – so that they can develop their skills as both students and soon-to-be female teachers. Congratulations ladies!
