This is Abrahat and Mammeet, who work in the staff lounge, serving coffee, tea and egg sandwiches to the college lecturers all day. We can often hear the staff shouting out “Mammeet!” when they need to get a cup of coffee or a beer. Another (acceptable) way of getting attention from a waiter or service in a cafe or restaurant, is to clap your hands loudly and shout your order! I don’t think that would work back home… I still can’t bring myself to do it. It feels very unnatural! Also people don’t really say please or thank you here – not out of impoliteness, it’s just not part of the culture – but I always say thank you (yekenyelle) to much amusement of the waitresses. These two are always giggling at my attempts at the language!!
