What to eat on ‘fasting day’?

Good news for vegetarians. On Wednesdays and Fridays in Ethiopia it is “Fasting Day” – although you can still eat as much as you like, meat is off the menu! So yesterday we enjoyed the following dish: atkilt bayinetu – an assortment of vegetarian dishes as well as spinach, beetroot and vegetable stew, all served on injera.

Injera is the staple food of Ethiopia – Dhamayanthi says it tastes like dosai, which they eat in South India.

Although our colleagues can happily polish off one each, one is big enough for both of us. However, the total cost is only 10 birr (about 40 pence!) so perhaps next time we can stretch the budget to two dishes!
